Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

A CDL is a state-issued license for operating specified classes of commercial motor vehicle. Federal rules establish minimum standards, while the state conducts licensing and adds its own forms, fees, and procedures.

Credential caveat

There is no single national CDL card or universal training price. Entry-Level Driver Training applies to specified first-time licenses and endorsements, but completing ELDT does not replace state knowledge and skills testing.

Role in the pathway

Legally required for drivers operating vehicles that fall within covered commercial classes; the class, endorsements, restrictions, medical status, and employer standards all affect what work is available.

Requirements to verify

  1. Identify the CDL class and endorsements required for the vehicle and job.
  2. Meet state eligibility and federal medical or self-certification requirements as applicable.
  3. Complete required ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel instruction with a listed provider when the rule applies.
  4. Pass the issuing state’s knowledge and skills tests and maintain the license and medical status.

Fees and validity

Learner-permit, license, skills-test, and endorsement fees are set by states and may involve third-party testers. FMCSA does not publish one fixed candidate total, so PathGauge leaves the fee fields null.

Renewal term, medical-certification status, endorsements, and restrictions depend on federal rules and the issuing state’s current requirements.
