Credential caveat

This credential does not replace a state or local HVAC license, and the certification type limits the equipment scope. Universal status requires a proctored Core test as well as Types I, II, and III; an open-book Core result cannot be used for Universal certification.

Role in the pathway

Required for technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment in ways covered by the Section 608 rules; apprentices may work only within the federal supervision exemption described by EPA.

Requirements to verify

  1. Select the certification type that matches the appliances you expect to service.
  2. Take a test administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization.
  3. Pass Core plus the applicable Type examination or examinations.
  4. Use a proctored Core test when pursuing Universal certification.

Fees and validity

EPA approves certifying organizations but does not publish one nationwide candidate fee. Provider charges and delivery methods vary, so PathGauge does not show a fixed price.

EPA states that Section 608 technician certification credentials do not expire.
